A pair of New Brunswick lottery winners has made a significant donation to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 in Moncton.
Peter and Rhonda Lockhart’s lives changed on May 14 when they won almost $10 million in a Lotto 6/49 jackpot. At the time they said they would use some of their winnings to help their community.
“We’re over here a fair amount. We know what the building is like,” says Peter Lockhart. “If it wasn’t for the veterans we wouldn’t be where we are today.”
Like many legions across the country, Moncton’s Branch 6 is struggling financially. Heating costs are through the roof and it will cost $100,000 to insulate the building.
When the Lockharts learned of the legion’s renovation bill, they decided to cover the cost and then some, writing a cheque for $125,000.
“The biggest thing it’s going to mean is this legion can stay open,” says legion president Robert Dupuis. “This is the biggest thing that was worrying me. If we don’t pay our bills we can’t stay open.”
Legion members say closing is no longer a concern, thanks to the couple’s generousity.
“Of all the sacrifices and time they have given to us, I think it’s wonderful for someone to give back to them,” says Sharon Hurd.
“I think that’s very generous and I thank them with all my heart,” says Reg Surette.
Peter and Rhonda have used their winnings to pay off their family’s bills, as well as their own. They have bought vehicles and renovated their home, but Peter says helping the legion is the best thing he has done with the money.
“Right at the top of the list because I never thought I could ever afford to do any of that stuff,” he says.
Estimates show the new insulation will cut the legion’s heating costs by half, ensuring its 535 members have a warm place to visit during the winter months.
