A teen accused of killing an elderly woman in her Richmond Corner, N.B. home appeared in Woodstock provincial court on Thursday.
Kyle Edmund Scott, 19, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 82-year-old Sarah Kennedy.
Scott was supposed to enter a plea in the case Thursday but it was put off to a later date.
The victim’s family and friends say they are still trying to make sense of what happened.
“It’s really too soon for us to be discussing this. It just happened,” says the victim’s grandson, Dylan Kennedy.
A family member went to check on the victim Saturday morning after neighbours noticed her television had been left on for quite some time.
They found her body inside the home on Route 555 and called police. The officers arrested Scott later that afternoon.
His family and friends are also struggling to make sense of the incident.
“We sympathize with Sarah Kennedy’s family,” says his great-aunt, Roseanne Scott. “Our hearts go out to them completely but everybody has to understand that he’s our family and we’re here for him.”
Police aren’t confirming whether or not Kennedy and Scott knew one another. His family says they don’t know if there is a connection.
“I have no idea. Woodstock is a small town but I have no idea,” says his great-aunt.
Scott is due back in court to enter a plea on Oct. 29.
