ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- A Newfoundland and Labrador judge has extended by a week a mental health assessment to determine whether a man alleged to have threatened to kill local politicians is fit to stand trial.
George Brake, 66, appeared by teleconference today to hear the status of his assessment, which a provincial court judge in Corner Brook, N.L. ordered last week.
According to a letter from Brake's psychiatrist referred to in court by Judge Wayne Wayne Gorman, the doctor needs more time to complete the analysis.
Gorman granted seven more days for the assessment, and Brake is to return to court Feb. 11.
Brake is charged with six offences, including uttering threats to cause death, possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace and two firearms charges.
RCMP say a man with 36 knives in the cab of his truck was threatening to execute local politicians when he was arrested Jan. 28 near the office of a candidate in the province's Feb. 13 election.
