A Nova Scotia man charged in the double homicide of a mother and daughter over the weekend did not appear in court today, but was taken to hospital instead.

Gerald Rushton, 47, is facing two counts of first degree murder in the death of Elizabeth MacPherson, 54, and Brittany MacPherson, 24.

The bodies of the two women were found at a home in Bible Hill on Friday night.

Both Rushton and Elizabeth MacPherson lived in the home together, but the 24-year-old was visiting.

Police confirmed the women died due to violence.

Rushton was treated in hospital and later released, but he returned to hospital and couldn’t attend his court appearance at Truro Provincial Court Monday morning.

The Department of Justice says it’s investigating an incident involving a prisoner at the Burnside Correctional Centre.
