Newfoundland man, 40, accused of public intoxication, assaulting a peace officer

Police in Newfoundland and Labrador say a 40-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a correctional officer while being detained for public intoxication.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary say they responded to a business in Corner Brook Friday evening at 8:20 p.m. after receiving a report of an intoxicated man refusing to leave.
They say the man was detained and taken to the Corner Brook lockup to be held until he was sober.
But police say during the administration process he assaulted a correctional officer.
They say the man, a 40-year-old resident of the Burin Peninsula, was charged with assaulting a peace officer as well as possession of a controlled substance, which was allegedly cocaine.
Police say the officer was not injured during the incident and the accused remains in custody.
