TRACADIE, NS - A Nova Scotia community mourns the loss of two teens.

It was a somber scene in Tracadie, Nova Scotia today. Flags at the local high school flew half mast; grief counselors stood by to help students and staff cope; a flower-covered cross sat at the side of the highway. All of it is to mourn the tragic deaths of 16-year-old Kory Mattie and 17-year-old Nicholas Landry, who lost their lives in a car accident Thursday.

County Warden Herb Delorey lives just a few hundred metres from the crash site. "It's a closed knit community and as you can expect, everybody knows everybody," says Delorey, "The extended families on both sides and the community is definitely in mourning right now."

The two boys were described by many as best friends, popular at school and within the community at large.

The accident happened on Highway 4. Mattie was driving a 1994 Ford Mustang with his buddy Landy along as a passenger when the vehicle collided on a curve in the road with a 2002 Crown Victoria driven by William Fogarty.

Police say the road was dry, the weather was clear and visibility was good at the time. Fogarty of Antigonish has been charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

Some locals say more drivers have been using Highway 4 in recent weeks to bypass road work on the main highway, often driving past the speed limit.

"I see people doing at least a hundred kilometers on this road," says Doreen Pitts who lives in the area, "and it's just too fast for a thickly settled area."

Foggarty has been remanded in custody for the weekend. He's scheduled to be in court in Antigonish on Monday.
