Nova Scotia Power will meet privately with the company's customer representatives in Halifax today to discuss the possibility of setting long-term power rates.

The utility says the three-year deal it is proposing would stabilize rate increases and make them more predictable.

Rene Gallant, an executive with the company, says the deal is similar to a proposal Nova Scotia Power put forward last spring, and includes a call to consider escalating fuel and operating costs and the company's rate of return on profit.

Nova Scotia Power met with its customer representatives last week, but the groups left without commenting on the proposal.

The company says any potential rate settlement with its customers would still have to be submitted to a Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board hearing for review before a final decision is made.

The utility has already filed an application for rate increases that amount to nine per cent for residential users and 16 per cent for large industrial customers.

A review board hearing will be held on September 19, where the application will be considered.
