The discovery of a suspicious package at a Halifax dockyard disrupted work for hundreds of personnel Tuesday.

Officials say someone spotted a bag left near a building at HMCS Dockyard around 10 a.m.

Emergency responders blocked off an area and specialists were called in to determine the contents of the package.

Military and civilian workers were affected for about four hours, until a team concluded there was no risk and the area was reopened.

“It was definitely a disruption for some personnel, not our entire base. We were able to minimize the amount of disruption based on the risk,” says Lt.-Cmdr. Ken Dufour, base operations officer at CFB Halifax.

“So, if you were one of the people in building D200 or an adjacent building, yes it was a big disruption, but time in this circumstance isn’t a big concern. It’s more about the effectiveness of the response and keeping everybody safe and protecting our workforce.”

D200 is a formation fleet maintenance facility. Investigators are working to determine what was inside the package and where it came from.
