MONCTON, N.B. -- The federal and New Brunswick governments are spending about $1.2 million to help seven oyster producers.

The seven companies getting the money are Acadian Bay Enterprises Inc. in Sainte-Anne-de-Kent, Cape Oysters Ltd. in Dieppe, Aquador Oysters Inc. in Aldouane, R & D Shellfish Ltd. in Cocagne, King Aquaculture Inc. in Richibucto-Village, Mauril Bastarache in Bouctouche and Norm's Oyster Farm Ltd. in Richibucto-Village.

The province is spending just over $377,000 through the Miramichi Regional Economic Development and Innovation Fund, while the federal government is providing repayable contributions worth about $893,000 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The money will be used to expand operations, increase sales and improve productivity.

In 2013, New Brunswick's oyster production was valued at more than $5.6 million.
