Fire crews in Saint John have managed to put out a major fire that erupted overnight Sunday atop a large pile of railway ties covered in creosote in the city's west end.

The fire started around 10:30 p.m. at the railway on Bay Street, near Gault Road.

Crews say the flames were visible from Rothesay Avenue in the city's east side at one point.

Acting district fire chief Mark Wilson says there are thousands of railway ties at the site, and at least 5,000 have been destroyed in the blaze.

Officials from Nova Scotia's Department of Environment have been called in due to air quality and runoff concerns and they will be conducting local air quality tests.

No one was injured and no homes had to be evacuated.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
