Momentum appears to be building in efforts to restore and open up the national historic site of Partridge Island in Saint John.

Finding a way to get people to Partridge Island is an issue that has been taken on by Saint John MP Wayne Long.

"As a federal government, we have an obligation to refurbish and restore Partridge Island to a state where it can be visited and where people can go there to see the immense amount of history that has happened on that island," said Long.

The ruins on the island have been off limits for decades, and many members of Saint John's Irish community want to be able to visit.

On Friday, Long reiterated an earlier federal commitment to figure out how to allow limited visitation to the island.

Cost estimates released earlier this year indicated it will take $30 million to $40 million to transform the rocky breakwater into an access route.

Long says using a passenger boat now seems a more realistic option.
