Residents in Saint John are hoping to rename a street after RCMP officer Const. Doug Larche.
Larche, who was born in Saint John, was one of three officers shot and killed in Moncton on June 4.
“We’ve got to remember the great people that have gone through this city,” says Saint John city councillor Bill Farren. “There’s a number of people who have suggested it to council.”
City council will discuss the idea further at the end of the month before going door to door to get more opinions from residents.
It would be a rare move to change the name of a city street.
“You have to go through 911 and rearrange everything that way. So it's not an easy thing to do,” says Farren. “It’s very rare and I think it would be a good honour for this officer.”
Many Saint John residents have expressed support for the idea.
"I think it's wonderful,” says resident Raffele Petek. “I think everybody would be really happy to be able to call a street after him."
"I think that would be a fitting tribute to a person that gave his life for public safety," adds Gerald Green.
As support for the name change continues to grow, city council hopes to have a decision made soon.
