Prince Edward Island's transportation minister is warning motorists that tough new penalties are in place for distracted driving.
Paula Biggar issued a news release today saying that recent changes to provincial laws double the fine for using a cellphone or other handheld communication device while driving to $500 to $1,200 and also increases the number of demerit points to five from three.
She says distracted driving is just as serious as impaired driving.
