An actress from Halifax, who now lives in Fredericton, has become the first woman to publically make allegations against former CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi.

Lucy DeCouture, the actress best known for playing "Lucy" in The Trailer Park Boysfranchise, has revealed graphic details of a date in 2003 during which, she says, without warning or consent, Ghomeshi choked her until she couldn't breathe, and hit her three times on the side of her head.

In an interview with CTV Thursday evening, DeCouture said the public response to her decision to go public has been encouraging.

“So many people, are responding in a way so positive, indicating that so many people have been in a situation that has been negative, and that sort of slays me, because really? How many people are in pain right now? A lot more than people know,” says DeCouture.

Ghomeshi released a statement on Facebook Thursday morning, offering thanks to supporters, and saying he plans to “meet the allegations directly.”

He is also suing the CBC for $55 million for defamation and breach of trust.

The corporation has said it will "vigorously" defend itself against Ghomeshi's lawsuit.
