Drivers in downtown Halifax will now have an even harder time finding a parking spot.

The municipality announced Wednesday the open-air lot behind the Halifax Central Library will no longer be available for public parking after the city sold the property to Dalhousie University.

A release from the city says the university will be posting signs on Thursday to indicate drivers will need a Dalhousie parking permit to use the Queen Street lot going forward.

Parking on the lot was offered free of charge to shoppers and library-goers last December to “ease the parking pressures” brought on by the new library’s opening and holiday shopping, the release said.

The free parking was then extended pending the sale of the property.

The city says the Queen Street lot will be closed for a few weeks during the transition of ownership.

The library’s underground parking lot, which is currently free of charge, will remain available during the hours the library is open, the city says, but drivers will soon be charged an hourly rate.
