FREDERICTON -- Sixteen-year-olds would be able vote in New Brunswick if Green Leader David Coon is able to get a private member's bill through the legislature.
Coon has introduced the bill to lower the voting age from 18 to 16.
The Liberal's house leader says in a news release the issue isn't a priority for the government, but the province will take some time to look at Coon's bill.
Hedard Albert says the Liberals are investigating ways to improve participation in democracy, including measures such as preferential ballots and online voting.
Coon says it's time to give young people a greater voice in the province and the best way to do that is by lowering the voting age.
He also hopes to inspire young people to get involved in discussions about the province's future.
Coon says debate on his bill will take place next year.
