A Halifax man has died in an unusual accident during morning rush hour.

Police say a trailer separated from its rig, colliding with a minivan.

“Around 7:37 this morning Halifax Regional Police responded to a very serious motor vehicle collision,” explains Constable Pierre Bourdages of the Halifax Regional Police.

The collision killed a 40-year-old man.

He was driving in his company vehicle when the trailer portion of an 18-wheeler somehow broke free and crossed the centre line before colliding head-on with the minivan.

The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to an employee at Frontier Technologies in Dartmouth, the minivan driver was a long time company employee.

The employee described him as a great man, who always had a smile on his face.

For those who drive tractor trailers, this accident comes as a shock.

Les Waye has been driving one for almost 40 years and says he’s never seen anything like this before.

“A trailer breaking apart and running free down the road is pretty well everybody’s worst nightmare,” he says.

Police say the man driving the tractor trailer is very shaken up, but otherwise okay.

Nova Scotia’s Labour Minister was quick to respond to the accident.

In a media release Kelly Regan writes:

“I can’t imagine how this man’s family must be feeling, and my thoughts are with them during this extremely difficult time. I want to assure this family that we will help find answers as to why this happened.”

Police say they won’t know if any charges will be laid until they’ve completed their investigation.
