HALIFAX -- Police say they evacuated about a dozen homes in a residential area of Halifax on Thursday due to concerns about an agitated woman who was in a residence with a shotgun.

RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae says that a 42-year-old woman called police to say she would harm herself.

MacRae says when officers responded to her residence on Smith Avenue in the Cole Harbour neighbourhood the woman threatened officers and refused them entry.

Police then asked some residents in the area to leave their homes while they negotiated with the distraught woman in her 40s.

MacRae says the woman went with police willingly and the incident came to an end within an hour.

He says police are still considering whether to lay charges.
