The RCMP say a man is in custody in connection with a double homicide at a home near Montague, P.E.I.

Officers responded to a residence on St. Mary’s Road at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday after a member of the public called 911. Police discovered two bodies inside the home.

Investigators confirm the bodies are those of a father and his adult son.

Officers set up road blocks at both ends of Route 318 to contain the area Wednesday evening.

“We weren’t really having a manhunt at that time,” says Kings County RCMP Sgt. Leanne Butler. “Roadblocks were put up to protect a crime scene and during the evening, into the morning, our investigation led us to a name of a suspect and that suspect then was arrested, but it wasn’t a manhunt per se in the area.”

A man in his 40s was arrested without incident in Montague around 7:40 a.m. Thursday.

Police say he is expected to appear in court Friday. Investigators don’t suspect anyone else was involved in the deaths.

The Mounties have not identified the victims or said how they died. Autopsies will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Police have also not confirmed reports that a shooting had taken place.

The incident remains under investigation and the roadblocks have been removed.

This is the first double homicide to take place in P.E.I. in decades and area residents say the murders have left them shaken.

“You don’t usually get this in Montague, so it’s just a shock,” says resident Carla Jamieson.

“To try to make sense of a situation like this, it’s something that I don’t understand personally and never will understand except that it’s a tragedy,” says Montague Mayor Richard Collins.

The incident is the second tragedy to shake the community this year. In March a fatal fire in Charlottetown resulted in the deaths of three youths from the Montague area.
