SYDNEY, N.S. -- A 46-year-old man was taken to hospital Monday morning after police say he told them he had spread gasoline inside an apartment building and threatened to set it on fire in Sydney, N.S.

Cape Breton Regional Police arrived at the two-storey apartment building on Lingan Road at about 10:30 p.m.

They say the man was barricaded in the building and allege he threatened to harm himself with a knife and that he also told police to kill him.

Police say the man agreed to leave the building at about 1 a.m. and was taken to hospital under the Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act.

Police say the man was the only person in the building and they later determined that no gasoline had been spilled.
