A local artist’s unique designs are making an impression at arenas across the Maritimes.

Mike Oulton of Riverview, N.B., has a deep catalogue of finished products that can be seen in a number of different leagues, from university hockey to Junior A, right up to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

“I start off doing all my designs on the computer, just so when I do a design I can send it over to them and see if they like it,” said Oulton.

Oulton is a fan of horror movies. He often incorporates his favourite flicks into his designs, but there are times when he's haunted by the quest for perfect concept.

“There's tons of nights where I sit and think, and I can't sleep because I'm thinking about what to do with these designs,” said Oulton. “So there are some sleepless nights but usually those are the times when I end up coming up with something.”

Oulton says inspiration can hit him anywhere at any time. But once a design is settled upon with the player, it takes about two weeks to complete the paint job.

“What I try to do is when I'm trying to pick the goalie’s brain a little bit, I'll ask him what are some of the things you're into,” said Outlon. “Do you like movies? Do you like video games? Do you like different music bands?”

Oulton started in the early 90s his first helmet was his own. He gave it up for a few years but picked up his air brushes again four years ago.

His goal is to one day have his designs on the ice with the professionals.

“The ultimate goal would be to get them started in the AHL and then work my way up to the NHL if possible,” Oulton said. “Hopefully it'll happen someday. We'll see.”
