High school students at The North Nova Education Centre in New Glasgow, N.S. have put their musical abilities to good use.

The students have recorded a new CD called ‘Family and Friends For Fuel.’ The album includes several original songs and proceeds from all sales will go to a local charity that helps supply heating fuel to less-fortunate families.

Students in the audio production and recording class put their lessons to work, to come up with an eclectic mix of musical styles.

“They did almost a hundred percent of the work. You know, they performed the music, they recorded it, they edited most of it, and did a lot of promotion of the CD,” says teacher Andrew Alcorn.

Carleigh Halliday took control as the producer of the CD, as well as being lead singer on one of the tracks.

She says the group tried to include original songs as much as possible and everyone involved is proud of the result.

“If all of us didn't work together, it wouldn't have worked. So it's nice. It was something that we could all do as a team and we got it done and it's good,” says Halliday.

Proceeds from the sale of the CDs are going to the Pictou County Fuel Fund, an organization that helps provide home heating oil to needy families.

“It instills a sense of responsibility. They realize that there are others who are less fortunate,” says Graham MacNeil of Pictou County Fuel Fund. “They're also creating a strong level of awareness with their peers and so this is just multiplying right across the entire school community.”

“It's great for the students to realize that even when they're having a bad day, there's someone else who could use their support and maybe isn't even as fortunate as they are,” says Alcorn.

The CDs are available at the school. Students hope they will become a hot seller, to help warm up the community.
