Nova Scotia has been forced to upgrade security after an important safety message along a highway was hacked Thursday night.

An LED sign near Exit 5A of Highway 101 in Windsor, N.S., intended to warn truckers of an alternate route, but was changed to say, “honk if you’re horny”.

“I think it is hilarious,” said one Windsor resident.

But Nova Scotia Road Safety Director Janice Hartland says it’s no laughing matter.

“On the surface it may seem like a joke or harmless, but that message was meant to deliver a safety message to people travelling on the highway,” she said.

Whoever pulled the prank was able to break into an orange security box and get past the password.

The message board was fixed by the morning. Highway officials spent Friday strengthening passwords across the province.

This isn’t the first time the prank has been conducted. Others have broken into the system to warn drivers of “zombie attacks” and “wild gorillas”.
