The president and CEO of Halifax’s Trade Centre Limited has resigned to take a job in New York City.

Scott Ferguson has accepted a position as the CEO of the World Trade Centers Association. There, he will work with 300 trade centres in 100 counties.

“I've had this incredible platform, and I've learned a lot about our province,” said Ferguson. “I've learned a lot about our partners, and I've had a very exciting stay at TCL.”

Ferguson joined TCL in 1985 and became the president and CEO in 2009.

"While we are disappointed to see Scott go, we have been very fortunate to have such a strong leader with a clear vision," said Justin McDonough, chair of the TCL board of directors in a statement Tuesday.

"Scott had a deliberate strategy for growth, and under his guidance we have solidified a strong future for the new convention centre and the event industry in Nova Scotia."

The board of directors has appointed Carrie Cussons, who is the current chief financial officer, as the acting president and CEO of TCL.

“She's led out finance and our corporate services team. She is absolutely perfectly equipped to take on this challenge,” said Ferguson.

Once appointed, the new board of directors of the Halifax Convention Centre Corporation will decide on a permanent CEO for the organization.

During Ferguson’s tenure, TCL has taken on a number of major projects, including the renovations at Scotiabank Centre and the construction of the city's new downtown convention centre slated to open in April.

Ferguson says he's leaving knowing the project is in capable hands.

“Our focus right now through the interim position is to be ready to operate, and we will be,” he said.

Ferguson leaves for New York in two weeks.
