PORTUGAL COVE-ST. PHILIP'S, N.L. -- Three people are in hospital after a boat capsized off the coast of Newfoundland this morning, sending the trio aboard into the waters of Conception Bay.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. near Bell Island across from Portugal Cove, about 15 kilometres west of St. John's.

Capt. Kimberly Lemaire, a spokeswoman for Maritime Forces Atlantic, says a private citizen came across the three boaters on top of the overturned vessel and took them to emergency workers on shore.

The condition of the three boaters is unknown.

There is no indication whether the incident is related to the recreational fishery, which began today.
