METEGHAN, N.S. -- A 68-year-old truck driver has been charged with violating provincial regulations after an excavator he was towing struck a bridge over a busy highway in southwestern Nova Scotia.

The RCMP says the incident happened late Sunday on Highway 101 at exit 31, near Meteghan.

Police allege the eastbound dump truck was towing a trailer with an excavator when the boom of the excavator hit the overpass.

Officials with the Transport Department have shut down a portion of the road until the bridge is repaired.

The truck driver has been charged with driving a vehicle that doesn't conform to a special permit issued for the truck and the vehicles it was towing.
