It's not something you see every day - a Zamboni listed for sale on Kijiji.

“With a little bit of work, someone could have a Zamboni in their yard,” says owner Clarence Routledge.

The truly Canadian classified ad is catching the eye of hockey lovers in Cape Breton.

“There's a lot of interest in a Zamboni,” says Routledge. “You know how the song goes, ‘I wanna drive the Zamboni.’”

Wayne Perry knows the machine better than anyone. He's been using it to resurface the ice at the Bay Plex Recreation Centre, in Glace Bay, N.S. for the past 20 years.

While Perry is now driving a newer model, he says his relationship with the old Zamboni was a smooth ride.

“It always done the job, and it was always looked after good. Everything was kept up, was always greased up, oil changed regular and everything kept up on it,” says Perry.

The question is who would want to buy a used Zamboni?

While offers for the 1995 Chevrolet ice resurfacer haven't exactly been flooding in, there have been a few people coming round to kick the tires.

Each winter, Rob MacNamara runs a backyard rink that has plenty of bells and whistles, including boards and benches. He has seen the Kijiji ad, but says he has neither a big enough ice surface, nor the storage space for a Zamboni.

“I think anybody who's been involved in hockey just wants that chance, at least once, to drive a Zamboni and to own your own private Zamboni would be kinda cool,” says MacNamara.

According to rink management, purchasing a new version of the used Zamboni would cost more than $100,000. They say, with a price tag of $2,500 and a few thousand invested into repairs and maintenance, the one for sale might still have another 20 years left.

“Wouldn't be too much to put this back in action,” says Perry. “Everything is beautiful on it. The motor's just like a brand new motor, and it still works fine. Maybe a little bit of work on the conveyor and that stuff, but otherwise it'd be fine if you put a little bit of money into it.”

MacNamara thinks there is a good chance they’ll make the sale.

“If you have the money, and the size of the rink, why wouldn't you? Why wouldn't you get a Zamboni?” asks MacNamara.
