Cape Breton Regional Police are reportedly investigating widespread incidents of so-called 'sexting' among students in the Sydney area.

In a news release being distributed to parents, and obtained by CTV News Thursday evening, police said students under the age of 18 have been taking nude, digital-photographs of themselves and then sharing them through Blackberry Messenger, cell phones and even social media sites.

The release points out those kinds of images are considered child pornography under the law - even if they were taken by the person themself - and sharing them is considered distribution of child porn.

Sources tell CTV News hundreds of images have been discovered, and several electronic devices have been seized as part of an ongoing investigation.

A principal of a local school confirms to CTV News his school has been sending the letters to parents.

He said school officials suspected a problem, but are surprised by the scope.

"It's a lot bigger than we thought," he said.

No one from Cape Breton Regional Police was available to comment Thursday evening.
