The iconic lighthouse at Peggys Cove, N.S. is getting a lot of attention these days, whether it’s from children out west or a pop star’s hit music video.
A lighthouse is featured in Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit song “Call Me Maybe,” and while the singer’s manager isn’t sure where the image came from, those familiar with Peggys Cove believe they know.
“I know that lighthouse anywhere,” says restaurant owner John Campbell. “We have hundreds of postcards of it. We have pictures. I've been looking at pictures of it for years. It is definitely the Peggys Cove lighthouse.”
Some might say the lighthouse in the video could be from anywhere, but locals say the proof is in the plaque.
“It's the only lighthouse that I know of with the plaque exactly where this plaque is, so that was a telltale for sure,” says Campbell.
Last week CTV News reported the story of a Grade 2 class in Calgary that was so upset over the tattered tower’s state, they started a letter writing campaign to save it.
After the story aired, a meeting was held with representatives of the federal government, who have now agreed to let a local group paint the lighthouse.
“I think it's a huge tourist attraction and I think it's deserving of a bit of sprucing up,” says visitor Vince Tirabasso.
“I mean, a lot of tourism is brought into Nova Scotia through Peggy’s Cove, so certainly the government should pride its gems,” says visitor Wendy Appleby.
Jepsen hasn’t weighed in on the connection between the lighthouse and her music video, but perhaps she will next week when she plays a show in Dartmouth, N.S.
