TRURO, N.S. - A formal merger is in the works between the Nova Scotia Agricultural College and Dalhousie University.
The announcement was made today by provincial Agriculture Minister John MacDonell at the agricultural college's campus in Truro.
MacDonell says the goal is to help the college, which has an enrolment of about 1,000 students, compete with similar institutions in larger centres.
Details on how the negotiations will proceed will be determined by both schools and the province, and it's expected the merger will take about a year to complete.
The agricultural college was one of six identified in a report released last fall by consultant Tim O'Neill as being at risk because of financial challenges that could threaten their long-term viability.
He said it was one of four potential candidates for a merger.
The others identified as merger candidates are the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, the Atlantic School of Theology and Mount Saint Vincent University
