A video of an emotional father posted on social media over the weekend has now gone viral.
Robb Scott was out renting a video for his family to watch when he noticed a father and his sons checking out the movie ‘Where Hope Grows.’ One of the main characters in the movie lives with Down syndrome and one of the children asked his father what that was.
“His dad fumbled over the words, and I could tell he wasn't trying to be malicious, he was trying to find the right thing to say and what came out was first, ‘an illness’ and then ‘an illness of not knowing anything,’” says Scott.
Scott has a five-year-old son, Turner, who lives with the genetic disorder.
“I heard the voice in my head say ‘tell him what it is, you can educate him right here,’” recalls Scott.
But he didn’t and Scott immediately regretted it.
When he got in his car he drove around Truro for some time, thinking about what had just taken place.
Scott says he pulled into a parking lot, took out his phone and recorded a raw, emotional video about the experience. He says the video was a way for him to turn back time and try to fix something he saw as a mistake.
“I have to re-set that button, because I failed him [my son] in that moment,” says Scott. “This kid had a blank slate and I could've filled it up, but I didn’t.”
Scott posted the video on social media and it has now had close to one million views.
Scott says having a child that lives with Down syndrome is an important part of his life and he wanted to share it with others.
“Down syndrome is literally one of the most beautiful things that's ever happened in my life,” says Scott.
When he thinks about what he would have said to the little boy in the movie store, Scott says it's not easy to put into words.
“I have two sons, one who has Down syndrome, and they're both the same. One of them learns at a slower rate, but that's it,” says Scott.
Scott says the response to the video has been overwhelming and he has received messages from as far away as the United States and the United Kingdom.
