A former Nova Scotia paramedic will not serve any additional prison time for sexually assaulting two female patients.

James Duncan Keats is already serving a four-year prison term for sexually assaulting an elderly woman.

On Thursday, a judge found that 51-year-old Keats abused his position of trust in 2013 when he groped the women in two separate ambulance transfers. The judge sentenced Keats to 30 months to be served concurrent with his four-year term.

“The end of the day here, Mr. Keats is never going to act in his role again as a paramedic,” says crown prosecutor Sean McCarroll. “That's what's important here, is that he will never again be in the position he was in when he committed these offences, so society is protected on that basis alone.”

The judge also said Keats has not shown any remorse.

Keats is appealing his previous conviction and sentence.
