SYDNEY, NS - The cat fight continues as Cape Breton's renegade SPCA branch ignores an eviction notice issued by the Nova Scotia SPCA to leave the property by noon today.

Kristin Williams, the Executive Director of Nova Scotia's SPCA, says when it dissolved its Sydney shelter last week the building and assets became provincial society property.

"I continue to be frustrated by the obstructionist strategies that are being employed here that clearly demonstrate that the individuals are not prioritizing the animals in need," says Williams.

The provincial SPCA announced it was taking control of the Sydney branch earlier this month amid reports the animals were not being properly cared for; however, staff of the former Sydney SPCA branch refused to acknowledge the move and renamed themselves the Cape Breton Human Society branch.

Mike Mombourquette, a member of the newly named Cape Breton Humane Society, says the board plans to meet all 27 recommendations made by a pair of veterinarians who inspected the shelter last week.

As the Cape Breton Human Society fights back, the SPCA says they'll need the court's assistance to end the stalemate

Mombourquette says it's too bad money is being diverted from animal care to cover legal costs.

"It's just a shame that all of that money is being spent on lawyers and legal maneuvers instead of being spent on the reason why we're here," says Mombourquette. "I certainly want to stay positive and stay focused – the reason why we're all here is for the care of the animals."
