HALIFAX -- Nova Scotia's Environment Department has given its approval to a controversial quarry outside Halifax, but has attached several conditions.

The province gave the operating approval to Scotian Materials Ltd. for a quarry under four hectares near Fall River.

The department says the approval includes conditions aimed at protecting the environment and people's health.

They include monitoring requirements for water and dust, noise level limits and blasting restrictions.

The company also has to set up a community liaison committee that includes people from the area.

People in the area have opposed the proposed quarry for years, saying they're concerned lake water will be contaminated.
