One man is dead and another is in hospital following an altercation in Saint John Tuesday evening.
Police responded to the intersection of Tower Street and Lancaster Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m.
“The caller indicated that a fight had ensued between males out onto the street,” confirms Saint John Police Sgt. Jay Henderson.
“When our uniform patrol arrived at the location they discovered two males that were seriously injured.”
Officers found a 23-year-old man and a 61-year-old man suffering from serious injuries. They were taken to Saint John Regional Hospital by ambulance.
Police say the younger man had been stabbed and died in hospital from his injuries.
The second man remains in hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries. Police believe he was run over by a car.
Investigators say a 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the alleged vehicle-pedestrian collision.
A 28-year-old was arrested at the scene in connection with the alleged stabbing.
“We’re not considering this to be a random act,” says Henderson. “All the individuals are believed to be known to one another.”
No charges have been laid at this time.
People who live in the area expressed shock over the incident.
“It normally is a quiet neighbourhood,” says neighbour Courtney Murray. “Not much happens here.”
“From here up it is, down lower it doesn’t got a good reputation, but round here it’s pretty quiet,” says Ron Perry.
Police are still investigating the incidents and are treating the stabbing and vehicle-pedestrian collision as two separate cases.
“As a result of the operator of the vehicle, the 22-year-old male, our investigators are working on that file,” says Henderson. “At this point it’s in our preliminary stage and they too will be consulting with the provincial Crown office to determine the most appropriate charge, if any will be laid in that.”
The man involved in the stabbing is expected in court Thursday morning. Police say charges may be laid at that time.
