It's a big weekend in the fight against cancer, with 35th Annual Terry Fox runs happening all across the Maritimes.

Roy Lane remembers seeing Terry Fox on his Marathon of Hope back in 1980 near Mactaquac, N.B.

“Tooted my horn to him and he flung a hand to me like that,” says Lane. “When I saw it in person, it had a big influence on me.”

An influence Lane brought back to the Village of Harvey, where he and other dedicated volunteers have kept the Terry Fox Run going for 33 years.

“Roy just has been pivotal in keeping the group together, we have a core group that have been together since the beginning,” says volunteer Jane Briggs.

Planning for the each year's event begins early and has included special visits from the family of Terry Fox.

“That community basically kind of blew me out of the water with the kind of revenue it produces from such a small community, between $7,000 and $9,000, which is quite huge,” says Gwen Smith-Walsh, with the Terry Fox Foundation.

Lane says his community is always ready to pitch in for a good cause.

“Harvey is small community, but they're very ambitious and supportive of anything like this,” says Lane.

There's also programming within the local school system, ensuring the Marathon of Hope reaches a new generation.

“Roy has very much a passion for Terry Fox and I think he has instilled that in all of us,” says volunteer Marcia Nichol.

“We've been very successful, we feel, for a smaller community, a lot of that has to do with Roy,” says Briggs.

Congratulations to Roy Lane, our Maritimer of the Week!
