Wilfred and Jean Feener are a couple with a giving spirit. Between the two of them, they have volunteered for a total of 100 years.

The power team, from Upper Lahave, N.S., have been passionate about volunteering at the Dayspring and District Fire Department since the day it opened.

“In ‘66, before we were married, when they were starting the hall here,” says Jean.

Wildred is a founding member. He served as fire chief twice and still performs a variety of tasks.

Jean was a founding member of the women's auxiliary and continues to organize many activities.

“It's just like a big family,” says Jean. “We just have fun, we work and we have fun and it's nice to help the community and help to support the men - raising money for equipment.”

Peter Simpson is a volunteer firefighter. He says the couple’s sense of community and kind hearts are greatly appreciated by so many in the area.

“It's just amazing how much they've done in the last 50 years, not individually, but as a team,” says Peter. “When I looked at them both, I just sort of stood back in awe of what they're doing now and what they've done over the course of 50 years.”

Dedication to the fire department runs in the Feener family: their youngest son Mark is the current department chief.

The pair says they enjoy their work and have no desire to slow down.

“As long as my health is with me,” says Wilfred.

Congratulations to Wilfred and Jean Feener, our Maritimer of the Week.
