HALIFAX -- A 71-year-old man who had been missing for almost two weeks is believed to have gone overboard from a ferry crossing to Newfoundland, police said Saturday.

Police said James Cuthbert boarded the ferry in North Sydney, N.S., but did not get off in Port aux Basques, N.L., on Oct. 26.

Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs said foul play is not suspected and police have ended their search.

"We believe he went overboard," he said. "He was seen on the ship on video and he did not come off the ship."

Cuthbert's car was found near the Cape Breton ferry terminal Thursday and police viewed video evidence, leading them to believe he boarded the vessel for the nighttime crossing.

Darrell Mercer of Marine Atlantic said the company provided police with extensive surveillance footage, along with boarding documents.

He would not say what the footage showed.

"We have significant surveillance resources on board the vessel, so that was provided to the police investigation," he said.

Cuthbert was last seen by family at his home outside Halifax on the morning of Oct. 26.
