Halifax’s new harbour ferry will be named after a fallen Nova Scotia soldier.

Residents of the Halifax Regional Municipality have voted to name the ferry after Master Cpl. Christopher Stannix, who graduated from Auburn Drive High School and attended Saint Mary’s University.

Stannix enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces in 2001 and was a member of the Halifax-based Princess Louise Fusiliers.

He and five other soldiers were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in April 2007. Stannix was 24.

More than 12,800 votes were cast online for the naming of the new harbour ferry, with 61 per cent of votes in favour of naming the ferry after Stannix.

“The person who submitted the winning name receives a conventional Metro Transit pass for a period of one year,” said Metro Transit officials in a statement released Monday.

“A number of residents wanted to honour Master Corporal Stannix by naming the new ferry after him. The submissions were time stamped to determine who sent in the winning entry first.”

The name is awaiting approval from Transport Canada. Once approved, it will be displayed on the new ferry when it comes into service in the spring of 2014.

Metro Transit will also organize a ceremony to commemorate the launch.
