Heavy rain, snow and winds in the Maritimes caused flooding in some areas, resulting in school closures and the cancellation of ferry services.

Water quickly built up on Moncton roads early Monday and remained throughout the day.

City crews in the area were working for days, clearing catch basins and drains to prepare.

“Today with all the rain that's been coming down, certainly our crews are still out there, are still looking at some of our problem areas,” said Isabelle LeBlanc with the City of Moncton.

One of those problem areas was around Jones Lake. By mid-afternoon, water was backing up into Centennial Park

“We've had a couple incidents of localized flooding throughout the city. We've had a couple reports of flooded basements,” said LeBlanc.

The Rexton, N.B., area received its first snowfall of the season, resulting in children getting an unexpected day off.

Nearly 20 cm of snow made driving a challenge in Bathurst.

In Cape Breton, there were problems commuting where high winds cancelled ferry service between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

Those needing to hit the road were required to pay close attention to weather conditions.

“I'm keeping an eye on it,” said David Miller, who was travelling to Mirimichi on Monday. “I know it's the opening day for the plows so hopefully they're up and running and doing their thing, but I have faith usually they're pretty good up there.”
