CHARLOTTETOWN -- The Prince Edward Island government has announced a $74.5-million capital budget for the 2015-2016 fiscal year, an $800,000 increase over this year's plan.

Finance Minister Wes Sheridan says the budget will ensure further improvements to highways, schools and health facilities along with information technology.

The government says the increase will allow it to access funding from the federal Build Canada Program for infrastructure projects.

The budget allots $35 million for highway improvement projects including the Souris bridge and the Trans-Canada Highway.

The government plans to spend $6 million to upgrade its computer software and $5 million on desktop computers for the education system, while $1.5 million will go toward a new 12-bed youth mental health unit in Charlottetown.
