PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. - Port Hawkesbury Mayor Billy Joe MacLean says he is encouraged by an email he received from the company negotiating a deal to buy a shuttered paper mill in the Nova Scotia community.

But MacLean says the process will be a slow one.

At last night's council meeting, Maclean said he's pleased officials from Pacific West Commercial Corporation are ready to meet with union officials.

The company's bid for NewPage Port Hawkesbury was selected in January.

Earlier this month creditors who say they are owed money by the idled paper mill were given until April 16th by a judge to submit their claims.

NewPage's two paper machines in Point Tupper have been shut down since September.
