RCMP in New Brunswick are trying to track down a suspect, or suspects, after part of a fire hydrant crashed through the windshield of a vehicle in Tracadie-Sheila on the weekend.

Police say the metal object was thrown from the overpass on Chemin Dignard and struck the windshield of a vehicle travelling northbound on Route 11 around 10 p.m. Monday.

Four people were in the vehicle at the time, including two children, though no one was injured. The vehicle received extensive damage.

"This kind of mischief could have caused serious injuries or even a loss of life," said Cpl. Scott Myles in a statement released Wednesday. "The driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle despite a chunk of metal crashing through the windshield."

Police say the metal object was part of a fire hydrant and that four hydrants had been tampered with in the Tracadie-Sheila Industrial Park earlier that evening.

The hydrants were damaged, which resulted in a massive loss of water to the community water supply system.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident, or who may have seen a vehicle or people in the industrial park Monday night, to contact their local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
