A sinkhole shut down traffic lanes for a few hours in downtown Halifax this afternoon.

Barrington Street northbound was reduced to one lane, causing a backlog of traffic, after city crews noticed the sinkhole forming at the intersection at Barrington Street, Upper Water Street and Cornwallis Street.

Halifax Water and city crews have secured the area and installed steel plates as a temporary measure. City officials say more permanent repairs will be made once the weather improves.

All lanes have since re-opened.
