The first stage of public consultation on the redevelopment of Shannon Park has begun, and officials say a stadium is not off the table.

Canada Lands Company held an ‘ideas fair’ at the Shannon Park School in Dartmouth Wednesday.

The abandoned military housing at Shannon Park will be demolished starting this fall, following a public consultation and planning process. The 40 buildings on the Dartmouth Waterfront have been vacant since 2003 and the mayor says he would like to see them gone.

The property offers a unique development opportunity, with about 35 hectares of land, ocean frontage, and close proximity to the MacKay Bridge, a highway and a rail line.

Four hectares of the land belong to the Millbrook First Nation.

“This is a prime piece of real estate and we need to think about this for the future,” says NDP MP Robert Chisholm.

Mayor Mike Savage has said he would support building a stadium on the site and Canada Lands Company says that is one of many options on the table.

“We don’t have a preconceived idea of what should be going on with the land so a stadium is one of a number of different uses that have already been proposed that will go in the mix,” says Chris Millier, the real estate director of Canada Lands Company.

“We’ll be looking for public comment about a stadium.”

Demolition is slated to begin in the fall and Millier hopes the project will be in the construction phase in two to three years.
