A house under construction in Halifax collapsed on Monday afternoon, trapping a man who was working on the roof.
Halifax municipal spokesperson Brendan Elliott said it was just before 3:45 p.m. when the structure collapsed on Lucknow Street, near the intersectionby Fenwick Street.
A wall of the extension being added to the home collapsed while a worker was on the roof smoothing out freshly poured concrete.
He ran onto the intact portion of the roof, but was hit by falling debris and left trapped under the collapsed wall. He was conscious, but injured.
Parts of Lucknow and Fenwick Streets were closed while firefighters and rescue teams conducted their operation, which took about an hour.
“It did take a little bit of time to make sure the patient was stable and to figure out the best and safest way to get him down off the roof,” said Halifax Regional Fire division commander Lloyd Currie.
By 6 p.m., the rescue was complete and the worker was sent to hospital for treatment of minor head injuries.
“He’s ok. He has a bang on the head and he needs some stitches. I’m just glad he’s all right,” said construction worker Anthony Taylor, the man’s colleague.
Nova Scotia Power attended the scene to turn off power to the building.
The Department of Labour will investigate the incident.
