Emotions ran high in Sydney on Monday as the two volunteer firefighters facing a string of arson charges returned for a bail hearing.

Stephen Tremblett, 49, and Jamie MacDonald, 24, of the Florence Volunteer Fire Department are both facing over 13 charges of arson.

“It's essentially 24-hour house arrest with numerous conditions, including no contact with the Florence Volunteer Fire Department,” said Crown attorney Sheldon Nathanson.

MacDonald paid $1,000 of his own money, with his parents paying thousands more for their son's release.

“His parents are both going to be providing the sum of $10,000, which is the sum of $5,000 by the way of personal belongings. They're posting cash bail in the amount of $5,000, which is their entire life savings to date,” said Nathanson.

According to the Crown, the police investigation into the matter is very much ongoing, with the two men from the Florence Volunteer Fire Department the only ones facing charges so far.

“It's an extensive criminal investigation in terms of the actions of these two individuals and it's ongoing, so we're concerned about the integrity on the investigation,” said Nathanson.

Tremblett returns to court Sept. 6 for a bail hearing, while MacDonald will be back Tuesday morning.
