The second time was the charm for a controlled explosion at the now-defunct NB Power generating station in Dalhousie, N.B.

Explosives were detonated on Aug. 16 in an attempt to collapse the station’s two smokestacks, but the demolition failed, leaving the smokestacks standing and the building partially collapsed.

A second attempt Thursday morning brought both smokestacks crashing to the ground.

Officials say they are currently checking the underground water line to ensure it wasn’t damaged in the explosion.

The plant started producing power in the 1960s. NB Power decided to decommission the plant in 2012.

Some of the 150 employees retired, while others were transferred to the nearby substation.
