FREDERICTON - The leader of the Green party in New Brunswick wants to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 in the province.

David Coon has introduced a private member's bill in the legislature to switch the voting age.

Coon says it's time to give young people a greater voice in the province and the best way to do that is by lowering the voting age.

The Liberal's house leader says in a news release the issue isn't a priority for the government, but the province will take some time to look at Coon's bill.

Hedard Albert says the Liberals are investigating ways to improve participation in democracy, including measures such as preferential ballots and online voting.

Coon says debate on his bill will take place next year.
