The Nova Scotia Department of Justice says no one was injured when an inmate at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth lit a fire in his cell.

The incident happened at about 2:40 a.m. Friday morning. The inmate was alone in his cell when he lit the fire. It was put out with an extinguisher by jail staff, and was contained to one cell.

The fire department was called but their services weren’t needed.

Some staff and nearby offenders were assessed for smoke inhalation.

The Department of Justice said in an email that the safety of offenders and staff is its number one priority. Police have been notified and will investigate.
